PATH TO PERMANENT RESIDENCE

EXPRESS ENTRY

The Express Entry is a three-stage electronic process, in which:

1. Interested applicants submit their profiles online.
2. Applications are assessed according to specific eligibility criteria.
3. Candidates, whose profiles align with the government needs or Canadian employers, will receive an invitation to become permanent residents.

The Express Entry system processes several programs, each of which has its own eligibility requirements.

  • Federal Skilled Worker: Eligible candidates must have a post-secondary degree and professional job experience.
  • Canadian Experience Class: Candidates must possess at least one (1) year of Canadian Job Experience in a profession or trade.
  • Federal Skilled Trades Class: Candidates must have a job offer with a Labour Market Impact Assessment and two (2) years of work experience in a trade.
  • Provincial Nominee Programs: Candidates must receive an invitation from a province to apply for permanent residence.

THE RURAL AND NORTHERN IMMIGRATION PILOT

This is a community-driven program, which means thateach participating community will have its own eligibility critiria according to its particular needs.

  • Skilled foreign workers who want to work and live in any of the participating Provinces must have a job offer from a potential employer that resides in the Province and a recommendation from the community.

CAREGIVER PROGRAM

Under the caregiver program, the government allows Canadian employers to hire foreign nationals to provide childcare or home support for seniors.

  • In some cases a Labour Market Impact Assessment must be submitted by the employer.
  • After two years of work, the caregivers are able to apply for permanent residence.

THE ATLANTIC IMMIGRATION PILOT

The pilot program helps employers of the Atlantic Provinces to locate qualified candidates for jobs when they have not been able to find them locally. The candidates can be overseas or living in Canada with a temporary residence visa.

  • Once the employer makes a formal job offer to the potential employee, both must go through some steps so the worker can apply for permanent residence.

FAMILY CLASS SPONSORSHIP

Canadian citizens or permanent residents can sponsor certain family members to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents.

  • Specific requirements must be met by both the sponsor and the sponsored person.

PATH TO TEMPORARY RESIDENCE

STUDENT PERMIT

Foreign students are required a visa if they wish to study in a Canadian educational institution. Eligibility criteria includes:

  • Candidates must be accepted by a designated learning institution in Canada.
  • Candidates must proof enough financial support during studies.

WORK PERMIT

Foreign workers are required a work permit if they wish to work in Canada on a temporary basis. Eligibility criteria includes:

  • A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), issued by Employment and Social Development Canada/Service Canada.
  • A positive LMIA is provided to the employer, who will give it to the foreign worker to submit with his/her application for a work permit.
